Hansjörg von Gemmingen has gained the bragging rights to say he has covered more miles in a Tesla Roadster than anybody else has. The German racked up an impressive 100,000 kilometers (62,137 miles) since he first purchased the car less than two years ago. A stockbroker living in the southwest part of the country, von Gemmingen says he drives his Tesla on a daily basis regardless of purpose or distance, charging it every night through a standard household outlet. A few days ago we brought you the news that GM will begin offering in-car wireless charging mats for mobile phones as an option from Q3 2012. These devices, that are making big waves at trade shows both in the U.S. and around the world, do away with the pesky cords and bulky adapters of old, replacing them with two conductive metal plates (i.e. one on the back of your phone and one in your car).

So imagine if you could charge your electric car this way. It should be simple, right? You’d just need to upscale it to suit charging a bigger battery. Well, at the 2011 CES technology trade show in Las Vegas, Fulton Innovation showed such a gadget by wirelessly charging the be-all and end-all of electric vehicles: the Tesla Roadster.

The EYE is a conceptual study by Italy's IED Turin in collaboration with Tesla Motors for a sporty C-segment hatchback model with an all-electric drivetrain. Designed with European and Asian consumers in mind, the EYE will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on March 2.

The futuristic looking concept is the product of the work of eleven Master Course students at the Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin (IED), coordinated by Luca Borgogno, senior designer with Pininfarina and by Andrea Militello, Senior FIAT designer.

Measuring 4,250 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,360 mm in height and with a wheel base of 2,650 mm, the 2+2 seater hatchback model is similar in size to a VW Golf. In its latest newsletter, Tesla officially confirmed that its forthcoming Model S which will be revealed in prototype form on March 26, 2009, will have an anticipated base price of $57,400 (€43,700 with today's exchange rates) or $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500, when it goes on sale in late 2011. This means that the Model S will not only cost half the price of the Tesla Roadster that begins from $109,000, but also that it will be priced significantly lower than Henry Fisker's plug-in hybrid Karma sedan that starts from $87,900.

"Because of tax incentives and relatively inexpensive maintenance and refueling, the lifetime ownership cost will be closer to cars with far lower sticker prices," the company stated.

Tesla aims to roughly split initial sales of its all-electric four-door sports sedan in North America and Europe, with Asian markets following shortly after.

Continuing its investments, Tesla Motors announced that it is planning to build a $250 million facility to manufacture a zero-emission luxury sedan in the heart of Silicon Valley. Named Model S, the five-passenger sedan will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and according, it is expected to have a base price of $60,000 and get around 240 miles or 386 km per charge. The first sedans will likely roll off the Tesla’s new assembly line in late 2010. Tesla’s President and CEO Ze'ev Drori said that construction on the 89-acre site would begin in the summer of 2009 and when fully operational, the facility will employ approximately 1,000 workers. -Continued

The company also said that it will relocate its corporate headquarters and research and development efforts to a consolidated campus in San Jose, California. Tesla, which currently produces the all-electric, two-seater Lotus Elise-based Roadster, said that it chose San Jose in part because the region already enjoys a high concentration of highly skilled engineers and support infrastructure. The new factory will be located 20 miles from the current headquarters in San Carlos.

The new plant won’t affect the Roadster as Tesla has no plans of moving production from the Group Lotus PLC factory in Hethel, U.K. Last week the company said it was ramping up production as about 1,200 people have already put down deposits for the Roadster. So far, Tesla has delivered only about 30 Roadsters.

Former Formula One World Champion, Damon Hill will sit behind the wheel of a Tesla Roadster in the GreenFleet Capital Arrive ‘N’ Drive 08 event, which will start on London’s Horse Guards Parade on 31 July, 2008. The eco-friendly challenge aims to promote the latest innovations to reduce emissions and improve air quality in London. The Tesla Roadster will be among the 20 public and private sector drivers taking part in the 33 mile-course to demonstrate the use of electric power as a viable alternative to conventional fuel sources. -Continued
